Preserving Biodiversity
Environmental Commons
believes in preserving biological diversity. We promote the understanding and connection between ecosystem alterations and its impacts to human health.
Biodiversity is a term provided for the variety of life on Earth as well as its
complex patterns produced as a result of years of evolution. Biodiversity is
recognized as the wide variety of plants, animals, and microorganisms.
It includes genetic differences and variability within organisms determining
the uniqueness of each individual created by the natural processes shaping
chromosome, genes, and DNA.
It has been nearly 14 years since the world's governments committed to
conserving our ecological underpinnings, or biological diversity, by adopting the
Convention on Biological Diversity.
And it has been almost five years since a supplementary agreement known as the
Cartagena Protocol
was accepted protecting biological diversity from the potential risks of
genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sometimes referred to as
transgenic organisms or
living modified organisms.
While the United States government has yet to ratify either agreement despite
100+ other world government ratifications,
Environmental Commons
confirms the importance of each agreement and is actively defending biological diversity,
genetic variability, and the wholeness of organisms within the natural environment.
