Who controls genetically modified crops?

As county supervisors eye a committee to study genetically
modified agriculture, a state bill could render the whole process moot.
Counties and cities would be prohibited from establishing their own laws
regarding genetically modified organisms, known as GMOs, under a Senate
bill authored by state Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter. Any such rules would
be under the domain of the state.
That prospect has some farmers and area elected officials concerned.
"It would take all the authority out of the hands of local governments,"
Supervisor Ellen Pirie said. "This is a decision I think the people of
Santa Cruz County should be able to decide."
